SOOM

Psychedelic stoner doom / Kharkiv, Ukraine

Blitz Interview

1. Let's start with the presentation. Introduce your band. Maybe few words about the history of the band?

We're the band called Soom, what translates from Ukrainian as grief/sadness/sorrow. History starts somewhere in 2010 with not so cool and too raw projects where we (Al Kova and Tomrer) played sludgy stoned psychedelic,  typical 0-3-5 pentatonic stuff with noise and lo-fi.
Now, from 2013, when Soom was born it's the same. But this time we've decided that our music must be based on ukrainian folk elements, like NOLA's sludge based on southern US' blues. And we decided to sing in our native language - ukrainian, at least in this we were first.

2. Everybody, as a rule, give stylistic labels. What about you, how do you stylistically indicate your music?

Really, we hate tags. So, I think it must be sound like if sludge was born in Ukraine and influenced with different styles as jazz, drum&bass, hip-hop, disco, death/black/thrash/industrial metal, etc, but only other listeners can really feel and know how it is. I prefer tag "junkie metal".

3. Your albums are already available to the listener. Is there something that unites them, or there is something individual in each of them?

Our debute album "Нічнаполонині" ("Night on the meadow") is the junkie surrealistic fairytale about three brothers an Grandpa, who lives in Carpathian mountains in Western Ukraine and everyone get high to start their trips. First brother has stay with Grandpa and get high by salvia divinorum with the cat, second has a pornful bad trip in a Kherson desert and regurgitate on the stone, third died after the growing the weed in a barren and meet the Weed God, and the Grandpa was an Electric Molfar (something like carpathian druid) and giving highness for all.
Our next album will be something like continuation of this album, but more evil, junkful, not so fun as the first.

4. If you still separate the music from the lyrics, what is more important to you? Or is it still a mutually complementary symbiosis?

We're using vocals only as atmospheric instrument. Texts has no sence, just surrealistic absurd to complete the many minutes of noisy doom.

5. Do you create ideas for visual creation of your music (cover) by yourself?

I hate the designers but I can't draw, so we talk to our friends to understand and help us to paint something, what they feel with our music and some idiotic ideas. Our new arts will be completely done by amateurs.

6. What about the live performances? How does the public perceive your work?

Our shows everytime is loud noisy lo-fi madness. Atmosphere of music maybe doesn't coincide with our metalpunkish and stoned theatricals. Once I said that people come to our show to have a slow headbanging and some good vibes but have a problems with a mindfucks and maybe bad trips.

7. Is there any foreign bands that influenced your music, style, lyrics? If there, which ones?

Not so long time ago I thought and spoke with my friend about it and write a list of influences. Most of tracks are influenced by Burning Witch and Unsane. But also here was Sons of Otis, Yob, A Place to bury Strangers, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Loinen, Corrupted, Earth, Esoteric, Miles Davis, Godflesh, Khanate and Author & Punisher.
