Atmospheric death doom / Kharkiv, Ukraine

sorrowul land

Blitz Interview.

Questions answered by Max Molodtsov.

1. Let's start with the presentation. Introduce your band. Maybe few words about the history of the band?

Hi there! Name’s Max and I present the band called SORROWFUL LAND. Now it’s a one-man band now, I’d call it a solo-project of mine. But the history is kinda tricky. It starts early in 2014 when I was asked by the friend of mine (Peter Laustsen from Swedish gothic-doom band WHEN NOTHING REMAINS, actually) if I wanna start a new doom project with him. I liked the idea and came up with a name SORROWFUL LAND in no time! Firstly we decided each of us will compose 3 songs, but it never worked out as we planned…Peter left the project and since then I rule the band and I’m the only one who’s in charge for all you hear on the debut CD

2. Everybody, as a rule, give stylistic labels. What about you, how do you stylistically indicate your music?

I’d say it Atmospheric Doom Death with Funeral Doom-ish feel to it. I tried to combine the melodics of the genre with depressive and aggressive sound.

3. Your album is already available to listeners. How would you describe it?

It’s heavy, melodic, melancholic and aggressive tunes. And very doomy, of course! One may hear clean whispered voices, growls and screams as well. As for guitars: melodies are intertwined with tight riffing and whaling wall of sound. By now SORROWFUL LAND released only one album, named “Of Ruins…”. It came out on November, 7, 2016 through the Solitude Productions label. Go and pick it up!

4. If you still separate the music from the lyrics, what is more important to you? Or is it still a mutually complementary symbiosis?

Music is much more important for me but I tried to bring some good tasty lyrics to the table as well. It’s always that I compose the music first. And when I create the song sometimes I’ve already know what I wanna hear in the lyrics.

5. Do you create ideas for visual creation of your music (cover) by yourself?

Nope. I’ve done some lyric-videos before for my main gothic-doom band EDENIAN, but I was not satisfied enough with these videos, so I abandoned the idea.

6. What about the live performances? How does the public perceive your work?

As I mentioned before SORROWFUL LAND is a one-man studio project only. I’d be happy if I’d have a possibility to bring my music from the stage but the lack of doomy musicians in my city makes this almost impossible. Sad but true…

7. Is there any foreign bands that influenced your music, style, lyrics? If there, which ones?

Indeed. Some of the few are: Paradise Lost, Draconian, Doom:VS, Saturnus, Swallow The Sun.

8. Which Ukrainian doom / stoner / occult groups do you like? Recommend someone to the readers.

Honestly, I don’t really keep my eye on the Ukrainian doom scene. But there are a buch of cool doomy bands here, like: Luna, Embrace of Silence, Eternal Void, WinterMor.

9. Share your plans for the future?

I do hope to release more records with SORROWFUL LAND, would be great to shoot a video for one of the songs. Who knows

10. Good luck and thanks for your time.

Thanx for cool questions, have a great day and….yes STAY DOOMY! \m/
