Drone doom / Lviv, Ukraine.

Blitz Interview

Answered by Goatooth.

1. Let's start with the presentation. Introduce your band. Maybe few words about the history of the band?

Hello. We’re Nonsun, a duo making an experimental slow heavy music. I play guitars. Alpha plays drums.

Nonsun were formed in 2011. We released a demo titled “Good Old Evil” in 2012. In 2013 two labels – Breathe Plastic (Netherlands) and Drowning (Denmark) – released Nonsun’s EP titled “Sun Blind Me”. In 2016 we released our first full-length album titled “Black Snow Desert”.

2. Everybody, as a rule, give stylistic labels. What about you, how do you stylistically indicate your music?

Our music is based mainly on doom metal and drone. Also, it incorporates influences from other genres, like post-rock, noise, ambient, sludge...

3 . Your albums are already available to the listener. Is there something that unites them, or there is something individual in each of them?

Well, both. Our debut LP is quite different from our two previous EPs. It has no vocals, and it sounds more ambient, abstract, I’d say. It has more kinda eerie, hypnotic sound-production, comparing to the first two EPs. Those had more traditional “metal” or “sludge-doom” sound, and there were vocals there. At the same time, the latest album is the continuation of the music that we made on those first EPs. It’s not just like a simple repeat or, let's say, refinement of the same thing, it’s more like a progressive continuation of a certain direction extracted out of what was on first releases. We’ve developed what we started back then.

4. If you still separate the music from the lyrics, what is more important to you? Or is it still a mutually complementary symbiosis?

Well, our latest album does not contain any lyrics, because it has no vocals at all. So, it’s not hard to guess what is more important to us :) However, I should say that I’ve always been paying attention to the songs lyrics. I always try finding the lyrics to the song I love. Damn, I even started learning English this way – by reading lyrics of Black Sabbath songs and trying to translate them, haha.

5. Do you create ideas for visual creation of your music (cover) by yourself?

I’ve done cover arts for “Good Old Evil” and “Black Snow Desert” by myself. For “Sun Blind Me” the artwork’s been done by Tobias Holmbeck (Denmark). This has been a really good job. I’m not a designer, so for a future release I’m thinking to use help of someone skilled at this, to give the artwork a decent professional look. Perhaps I’ll come up with some ideas, but the work will most probably be done by a "true" designer.

6. What about the live performances? How does the public perceive your work?

We have not played live very often, but we’ve got something to be proud of – our first live performance was opening the show for Yob and Pallbearer in Wroclaw, Poland. Not bad for a live debut, isn’t it? :) The public perception was surprisingly great, considering the fact that we hardly were known to the people attending the gig.

7. Is there any foreign bands that influenced your music, style, lyrics? If there, which ones?

Absolutely. They're plenty. From Black Sabbath to Dead Can Dance to Paradise Lost to Burzum to Eyehategod and so on and so on. Talking about drone-doom and experimental heavy music, which has had more direct impact on Nonsun's albums, I’d name Earth, Boris, Nadja, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Swans, amongst others. I’m also much influenced by the XX century minimalist composers.

Alpha is more into classic- and prog-rock, bands like Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Rush, Genesis, Pink Floyd…

8. Which Ukrainian doom / stoner / occult groups do you like? Recommend someone to the readers.

I would recommend Pree Tone, Soom, Gamardah Fungus.

9. Share your plans for the future?

To make more music. That’s all I can wish for now. Let’s just focus on this only plan)

10. Good luck and thanks for your time.

Thank you too for your interest! All the best to Path Of Doom and your readers.
